Barcelona 2

Hey you guys!

Last night Kali and I had so much fun, we met up with some girls here at our hostel and we all went out for dinner and to a bar called the Dow Jones. 2 American girls and 1 Aussie
For dinner we had a HUGE paella with seafood and it was good, a little expensive but Kali and I have been really really good at saving money. Actually we haven't even taken a cab until last night we did since we were a little lost.
After dinner we headed for the beach (2 seconds from our dinner patio) and had beers to waste time because Barcelona doesn't start until 12. We sat on the beach enjoying the beautiful weather and company before moving on to this bar the americans had heard of. The bar was really cool although quiet since the night before people went wild in the streets all night. The Dow Jones bar is like what you might think, its a stock market of alcohols. If the alcohol/beer hasn't sold in a min. the stock goes down (price lowers) on the screen and turns red with the little down arrow. If the drink is really hot and everyone is buying it up the stock goes up (price goes up) so really the whole night you look to see what is down and buy it up to get a good deal. We had 4 shots for 9 euro one time and thats damn good! Kali and I had paulaner for 2.5 which is exciting since the night before we were paying 5 for new castle at a bar watching the game.
Today the plan is to go on a bike tour with the ausie that we met last night and after that chill on the beach

Barcelona 1

Well Spain won!!! Yay, we partied last night and had a great (safe) time, don't worry Dave. We went to a bar and watched the game and then joined a mob that were swinging on lamp post and screaming "Espana". We screamed and jumped up and down then decided that was getting old so we went to our hostel and hung out for a while before bed at 12.
We loved Madrid and saw sights like the Prado Museum, we thought was not near on the level as the Louvre, and we saw a famous fountain, it was nice. We loved the Hostel! Always hot showers and very safe! Our roommates were smelly guys but we saw them 2 times and only for a little while.
Today we are going to explore Barcelona and have a great time I'm sure!

Love you all!

We made it

We made it to Spain we are checked into our hostel (it´s really nice, only 4 beds in the room) and we are on our way out to explore. Madrid is really slow paced and nice compared to the busy smelly Paris!

Love,

We are leaving!

Hey all,
Today we leave Paris. The phone numbers listed before are French so we won't be using them anymore, so don't call. We will have our phones from the USA with us but only for us to use as emergencies. Mainly contact will be kept by internet when we can get it.
Love you all and hopefully we will hear from all of you soon.

Hi guys!

Hey Y'all,

Good thing Travis reminded me to blog or I would have never came back! No, really though Kali and I have been very busy for the past while with going out and having fun, fighting off men, and planning the next leg of our trip, oh yeah and we have school but that is not really taking that much time!!!!
So here is what we have planned for the next leg, since I'm sure you don't want to hear about all the boring stuff we have been up to (like huge city wide music festivals). We booked a hostel in Madrid named MAD where we will stay the 27th and 28th of this month, yes we leave on Thursday night for Madrid!!!! Then we take a quick train to Barcelona where we spend 4 nights a well acclaimed hostel named Mambo Tango. We booked both on hostelworld.com so feel free to check up on the places (mom's and dad's) to make sure you guys think they look good.
I must say Kali and I are ready to move on from here. We have gone through a lot, seen a lot and laughed a lot but everything comes to an end. We love Paris it is such a great city to visit and experience. I agree with most people now when they say "Paris would be better with out the Parisians". They are ok but I don't think anyone can compare to Texans, I hope some other city will change my mind though.
This week we have a 5 page paper to write and an oral presentation for our art class and for French we just finished the 3 test series we were meant to take and now only have one day left of that class. For art we start presentations tomorrow and we (Kali and I) are making our presentations on Thursday (the last day of class). I am writing my paper over a painting at the Louvre that I love The young Martyr (the one that Kali and I both found to show each other, previously posted) and Kali's paper is over Murder of Agamemnon.
By the way everyone since we leave on Thursday night we are shipping our phones on Wed so whoever wants to talk by phone needs to do it soon!!!!
I'm taking my computer with me the whole time so hopefully we will be able to blog sometimes and email.

Love Savannah

Wed & Thursday Week 3

Hey Y'all (that felt good!)

Wed.
A long day! In the morning the subway line that we were riding stopped running so we were late to French class. French same old same old with the repetition of phrases. After class we wondered Paris for hours! I was so tired I thought my feet would give out! The only really not worthy event was the Seine cruise we went on with ISA. We had a lot of fun looked at all the sites from the water this time and made some acquaintances into friends by planning a trip to the Seine for lunch one day. I will post pictures of this night next.
Thurs.
Today! We went to the Musee de Orsay. Which houses Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir, Rodin, and many other famous works. We waited hours to get into the museum in the cold because the cashiers were on strike. Ridiculous is what I have to say! Any who I will post pictures of it so you can see it through our eyes.

Travis:
At dinner the family quizzes us. "Do you know about the hostage situation in Columbia?" <--- example. Then we were told that we didn't know anything because Bush doesn't let us. Another night we were asked what candidate we preferred. They love Barak and hate McCain. They think McCain too old. They had never heard any of the drama associated with Barak though. They never heard about the pastor issues and such. I think they only here a skewed view so they might not be the best to make an opinion on our politics. Kali and I have decided that they are ignorant. They think they know everything about what an American is and what they may think but they have no true idea. They don't change their opinion even if you feel that you warranted a change in it.
Kali’s Dad:
Thank you for lunch today! We took up your offer and had lunch at Indiana’s, it was great! We had nachos, fajitas and enchiladas. I had to roll Kali and myself out of the place.
Everyone:
Call us when you want to! Don’t forget to comment and keep in touch often, home is a long way away.

(Friday night continued) So, as we sat at the table eating our "dinner" and saying goodbye to our hostfamily as they left for a restaurant, we just could not control ourselves. What is a former Cordon Bleu professor doing feeding us hot dogs? Why is she not embarrassed to serve that to us? This could not go on any more. We were so angry there was even some tears. It had gotten a little ridiculous, no one can eat like this for weeks. Savannah grabbed a pen and paper and started making a list of food we like to eat for breakfast: cereal that does not have chocolate in it, boiled eggs, whole wheat toast, fruit. For dinner: fresh food, not microwaved food everyday, food that is healthy but has flavor, more stove and less microwave, and most importantly, less microwave. After we had settled down a bit we decided that we needed to have some fun and take Netty out for her last night in the house. We headed out to our favorite place, Le Cardinal, and relaxed with some wine and desserts. It was getting late so Netty headed home but Savannah and I stayed a couple more hours, not wanting to be anywhere near our hostfamily. It eventually got pretty late so we headed home knowing that everyone would be asleep and we wouldn't have to talk to them, we could not pretend to be nice anymore. We walk into our room and notice a note on Savannah's desk. A note from Marie that said, "I read your letter. We need to talk. Please let me know what you need. You cannot have healthy and with flavor, it is one or the other... I'm sorry." Oh my god... Savannah accidentally left our lists of food out on the kitchen table and Marie read them, we did not mean for her to. We had to leave for our weekend excursion to the Loire Valley soon so we quickly wrote her another note saying we were leaving for the weekend and didn't mean to hurt her feelings and we would talk when we got back. We were terrified at what she would say, she is a very intimidating person, but were glad that we would not be home for a couple days.
(Saturday) We left for the Loire Valley early Saturday morning after stopping and getting the most delicious croissants at a random bouillangerie with the whole group on two very large coach buses. The first chateau that we visited was Amboise. It is famous for being the place of many hangings of Huguenots and for being the place where Leonardo da Vinci is buried. The chateau itself was OK, but after being at Versailles the week before, we just weren't very impressed. Everyone then ate lunch in the town and we and some other ISA people ate at a chinese restaurant. All we wanted was some broccoli and some lo mein, but we were brought a plate of cabbage instead of our noodles. Apparently, just because something is listed under the noodle category, it doesn't necessarily mean that noodles are in it. We just weren't having very good luck with food in France. After eating some broccoli and a little bit of cabbage for lunch, we all left for our new destination, the chateau Chenonceau. This chateau was so beautiful, we kept imagining how amazing having a party or wedding here would be. We have pictures of it below. It was built across the river and also served as a bridge. Because of our horrible lunch, we decided to get some ice cream. After enjoying our ice cream, we all got back on the bus and waited for a surprise that was planned for us. It ended up being wine tasting and everyone got to try two whites, a rose, and red. They also had the most amazing goat cheese I wish I could have bought some! Our program directors kept pouring us more and more wine and opening up more and more bottles it quickly turned from a tasting into more of a party. Everyone got back on the bus and we headed to Tours to spend the night at the Holiday Inn.
(Sunday) We wake up and get to eat the greatest breakfast of our whole trip at the Holiday Inn. There are croissants, pan au chocolate, juice, fruit, nutella, and more. After finally getting a good breakfast, we left for two more chateaus. The first one was Villandry and is famous for its gardens. They were so beautiful that we didn't even go into the chateau. We took a small hike into the woods nearby and had an amazing view of the gardens. The last chateau of the trip was Chambourd. It is famous for its architecture that looks like a skyline and a double helix staircase designed by Leonardo da Vinci. It was nice, but the best part was the ice cream. I had caramel fler de sel and creme brulee and Savannah had caramel fler de sel and chocolate noir. It was amazing. Time finally came to leave and we headed home just wondering how our confrontation with Marie would go. We got back, took the train home where luckily no one was there. Marie and Victorio soon got back but we were met with nothing more than a friendly "bon soir." We waited in our rooms and started to smell food. We heard her call for dinner and we slowly walked to the table. We were amazed, chicken that was cooked in the pan, real potaotes, and salad. She even asked if we wanted lemon! During dinner, there was the usual talk about politics but nothing was said about the note incident. There was cereal, fruit, fresh vegetables, eggs, and so much more. We went to bed happy knowing that things were finally going to turn around and we would start eating better.
(Monday) We went to French class in the morning then tried a chinese restaurant again for lo mein, but still didn't get any. We then spent the day at a local pool laying out and swimming a little. For dinner we had hamburger meat with no bun but it was topped with a fried egg. It was soo good, I am always going to make my hamburgers like that from now on. We know started to believe that she could have gone to the Cordon Bleu.
(Tuesday) We went to Les Invalides and Musee Rodin for Art and Arch class then went to a market and had a picnic in the park in front of the Eiffel Tower. For dinner we had salad caprese with FRESH tomatoes, mozzerella, and basil. Then some really good thin ham that we ate with potatoes and creme freche. For dessert we had a fruit salad with strawberries, apples, peach, basil, and mint. It was amazing! I could eat that everyday. So, our food situation is finally starting to turn around and we are actually excited about coming home for dinner!!

while we wait for Kali's posts to be finished...

Thursday, Friday and Our Weekend

Hello everyone! Well, its been a while, so I will catch you up with what has happened since Thursday.

Well, on Thursday morning we met at the Louvre pyramids bright and early with our Art and Arch class. We spent the day looking at famous sculptures and paintings from early Egypt, Greece, Rome, Iran, France, and lots of other places. My favorite was the "Winged Victory" statue (see pic below) and Savannah loved the "Raft of Medusa" painting. We stayed at the museum until mid-afternoon until we were so tired that relics from 300 BC ancient Egypt were not enough to impress us. We came home, napped, then nervously waited for dinner hoping for something not out of a microwave. But, of course, it wasn't and we got some great charred hamburger meat that Savannah blogged about a couple days ago. However, our French teacher canceled class on Friday, so we were not going to let the worst meal we have ever been served in our lives going to get us down, so we went out. We started at a nearby cafe that has become "our place" and then went to a nearby Irish Pub for some fun and escape from our homestay.

Friday was our day off so we got to sleep in. We found a really cheap area to go shopping, thanks to my fantastic Paris for Dummies. It was nice to go into a store with the chance of actually being able to afford something. On our way down the street we came across the most amazing market. When we went to Paris, we expected to find markets like this all over the city, and finally we had found one. We ended up buying a bottle of Bordeaux for less than 4 Euros, some salami, bread, a really amazing cheese, and some fruits. We then headed home to rest and snack on our goodies. After a short rest, we knew that dinner was going to be soon. It was the dinner that changed our lives: plain really, really cheap hot dogs and powdered mashed potatoes. Yes, I am serious. Our hostmom, who was raised in the Cordon Bleau, not only served us burnt to a crisp hamburgers the night before but had just given us nasty hot dogs one might serve to a dog and potatoes that had the consistency of grits. We had had enough. To be continued...

Tonight's Dinner

I just wanted to update everyone on the hilarious dinner Kali and I just ate. I will set the scene for you all. I had just finished writing the post and told Kali all that was on it and we were looking up somewhere fun to go tonight since we don’t have class tomorrow. We are looking up clubs and laughing about how some books disguise gay bars in the straight bar section and all the mistakes that might happen there when I take a break to use the WC. I go out and come back but while in the hall I smell a unique smell to the house. I rush into the bedroom to alert Kali I smell grilling onions!!!!! Our mouths’ are watering, the smell reminds of food we left behind, food that was actually good. We are in a chatter about the possibility of a great meal! Soon we here the dinner call of Marie in her high pitched voice, something in French that I don’t know what it is but know what it means. We stride out to our places to eat, look down at our plates with anticipation to see what kind of meal she made with onions, thinking could she just now be using her culinary skills. There on our plates are what were frozen patties of meat with one side of them burnt so bad you could crack your teeth on it and a pile of black onion bits on top of it. WoW what a meal you are saying as you read this, you might even want to know where you can get some of that yum yum. Here is how just open your plastic wrapped burger put it on a hot plate and just leave it there for a long, long time and voila! But no worries we are going to go out and have a great time tonight, even with burnt burgers in our bellies.

Football/museums

Hey all,
Well we went to the France Vs. Columbia football match the other night, so much fun. Tickets only cost us 10 and we got some t-shirts to fit in for 15, all in all very worth the money. France one and that made the night all the merrier. To get to the game we had to take the metro, which we knew would be crowded because of the game so we boarded early and got on our way. We have to switch trains to get to the stadium and on our second train I learned what a really busy day on the subway was like I was smooshed against the wall of the car with people on every other side of me. I couldn’t even scratch my nose but Kali and I just laughed the entire way about it. The game was great, the beers were expensive and before we knew it the event was over and it was time to go home. After the game we stopped on our way home to have some desert at our place Le Cardinal. It’s always nice to gloat about doing something cool in France to French people that didn’t have the chance. Lol.
Since the last time I have written we have visited Victor Hugo’s mansion, gone to a museum named Carnavalet, had another French class, and today we visited the Louvre. Most of the places mentioned above are really to be seen and not read about. For example the Louvre is impossible to see all of it in one day so there really is no way that I can express in words how amazing the museum is. Carnavalet is famous for its French revolution paintings that are really horrific and sad to view.
I must confess to my friends and family, I am getting to the peak of homesickness. I hope from now on it will start to subside but this trip is a lot of adventuring and doing new things almost everyday gets to be very tiresome. I miss home for so many reasons though. The French, once you get passed the fantasy touristic view (witch is what I just lost I am assuming), are not as great as I thought that they would be. I thought the French people were all stylish and ate great food all the time; they most defiantly do not and are not! The food at our home stay is all microwave pre packaged meals. Last night we ate frozen salmon that was individually packaged and the rest was boiled frozen vegetables. Now this food wouldn’t be as unbearable if we had not been told before our arrival that the hostess of the house was a professor at the Cordon Bleu. Ok, well that was me complaining and in the future I am sure that my opinion will change and I will readjust to my new environment, and when I do I will be moving off to Spain for a new readjustment!
Well I hope everyone has enjoyed getting a card from Kali or me, you most likely won’t be getting two since they are so expensive to send. Love you all and see you soon.
